From the Executive Director,
National Emergency Management Registrars,

"Duck and cover…", "Stop, drop and roll…", "Only you can prevent forest fires…", "Be prepared…". Maybe I'm dating myself but I remember these quaint sayings and the times they represented but, were they really only quaint sayings or was there something more to them?

What did these sayings mean? What did they invoke in each of us? For me, they meant I knew what to do in a given situation and, as the last one clearly states, I was prepared. In reality, did knowing these sayings mean a true state of preparedness existed and that by responding accordingly, I would always be safe? Perhaps not, but it did show an awareness and an effort along those lines.

Fast forward from the era of "duck and cover" to today and we find ourselves in a vastly changed and more unpredictable world than ever. Quaint sayings don't begin to express the need for being as prepared as possible for whatever may come our way in the near future but, the idea of knowing what to do in an instant still has its place. That is where National Emergency Management Registrars plays its role.

National Emergency Management Registrars (NEMR) was founded by a team of individuals with a heart for the safety of America and Americans.

Watching events unfold, whatever their cause, which adversely affect our neighbors is painful and to hear their stories in the aftermath can be heartbreaking but more times than not, the question is always asked… "What could have been done to be more prepared?"

It is my hope to have NEMR answer this question and fill this void by ensuring that those directly affected when disaster strikes, are able to sustain themselves at that point in time until help arrives.

It is my belief that developing a comprehensive, easy to access emergency management system is the key.

It is my desire to assist organizations in developing and recognizing their systems through certification, registration and maintenance.

A recent quote struck me as pertinent to the mission of NEMR:

Thomas Mynsberge, a specialist in critical incident management asked…

"If your (organization) were to have a crisis tomorrow, would your staff be able to act immediately according to a well-rehearsed plan? Or would they frantically look for the "handbook"? (Organizational) staff needs this training until every staff member can react from memory; there just isn't time to look it up in the handbook. Train your staff to react from memory for first-line defense…"

This takes me back to "Be prepared…"

Take a moment to consider your organizations state of readiness should disaster strike. Would you be able to restore your business in a reasonable amount of time? Would your staff, customers, residents or students be safe? Can you "stop, drop and roll"…and end up on your feet again, ready to continue your operations?

Can NEMR help you answer these questions with assurance? That's our purpose.

Take the time to download the NFPA 1600 checklist we've made available to evaluate your organizations state of readiness, complete our questionnaire and contact us today to begin the certification process.

Michael Shea,
Executive Director
